A central distinction in Zizioulas’ theology. An individual is defined by separation and self-enclosure, ultimately governed by the fear of death. A person is constituted by relationship: one exists truly only in communion, receiving one’s unique identity from the other. The Church calls human beings from individuality to personhood.
