Hesychasm

The mystical-ascetical tradition of inner stillness (hesychia) and unceasing prayer, associated especially with St. Gregory Palamas (14th c.) and Mount Athos. It holds that through purification and prayer the saints can genuinely behold the uncreated Light of God—His energies, not His essence. The hesychast controversy (1337–1351) clarified the essence– energies distinction.
