The uncreated, personal self-giving of God. In the patristic and liturgical tradition grace is not a created “thing” transmitted mechanically, but the personal presence of the Holy Spirit given to the Church. Zizioulas stresses that grace must be understood in personal terms: what Christ gives is himself, not merely an energy or power.
