Freedom

(Eleutheria)

For the Greek Fathers, freedom is the defining characteristic of the person as image of God. It is not merely freedom of choice but the ontological capacity to transcend nature—to exist not as determined by biological necessity but as constituted by love and communion. True freedom is freedom for the other, not freedom from constraint.
