In Maximus the Confessor, a symbol or type is not a mere sign pointing away from itself but a real participation in the mystery it signifies. The Church, her sacraments, and her icons are symbols in this sense: they make present the eschatological reality of the Kingdom, uniting the visible with the invisible in the person of Christ.
