Theotokos

Greek: “Birth-giver to God” or “Mother of God.” The title given to the Virgin Mary by the Third Ecumenical Council of Ephesus (431) to affirm the unity of Christ’s person: the one born of Mary is truly the eternal Son of God. In Orthodox piety the Theotokos is venerated above all saints, her dignity grounded in her unique personal communion with the incarnate God.
