Pentarchy

The Byzantine model of five patriarchal sees (Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, Jerusalem) as the principal centers of leadership in the Church. Zizioulas notes that the pentarchy was grounded in historical significance rather than in the cultural-ethnic principle of Canon 34, and served the unity of Orthodoxy in the Byzantine period.
