Monasticism

The ecclesial charisma of radical commitment to God through ascetical life, poverty, chastity, and obedience, typically in community (cenobitic) or solitude (eremitic). Zizioulas describes it as an eschatological protest and an extension of the crucified Christ through the ages. Monasticism belongs within the Church, under the bishop, and culminates in eucharistic communion.
