The Orthodox Trinitarian principle that the Father is the sole cause (aitia), source, and principle of the Son’s and the Spirit’s personal existence. Unity in the Trinity is personal, not substantial. This principle is at stake in the Filioque controversy: any suggestion of a second cause for the Spirit’s procession undermines it.
