Image and Likeness

(Eikōn and Homoiōsis)

The biblical phrase (Gen 1:26) interpreted by the Fathers as: the “image” is the God-given reality of the human person as free being (given at creation); the “likeness” is the eschatological fulfillment to be achieved by grace and freedom (pointing toward theosis). Humanity is not created perfect but for perfection.
