The invocation of the Holy Spirit in the eucharistic prayer, calling on God to send the Spirit upon the community and the gifts. For the Eastern tradition the epiclesis is the decisive consecratory moment. It also characterizes the Church’s entire existence: she lives by continually asking for what has already been given in Christ.
