Maximus the Confessor, St.

(580–662)

Byzantine theologian and ascetic who deeply influenced Zizioulas. He developed the eschatological Christology in which the incarnate Son is the “final cause” of creation; elaborated the distinction of logos (reason) of nature and tropos (mode) of existence; and articulated the cosmic dimensions of the Eucharist and theosis.
