Macarian Tradition

The spiritual tradition associated with Pseudo-Macarius (4th–5th c.) that restored the heart as the center of obedience and love in the ascetic life, saving Eastern monasticism from Evagrian intellectualism and individualism. It emphasizes that true prayer is not mental abstraction but the engagement of the whole person.
