Originally meaning “subsistence” or “concrete existence,” the Cappadocian Fathers gave this term its decisive theological meaning: the unique, concrete mode of existence of each divine person. Zizioulas extends this to anthropology: the human hypostasis is the unique, unrepeatable identity constituted through free relationship—not reducible to nature, biology, or psychology.
