The sacrament of anointing with holy chrism following Baptism, by which the baptized shares in Christ’s own anointing as priest, prophet, and king. It incorporates the person into the royal people (laos) of God and leads immediately into the eucharistic assembly. In the East it has never been separated from Baptism.
