The head of the local eucharistic community, the living icon of Christ (alter Christus) and successor of the Apostles (alter apostolus). The bishop is the center of unity who gathers the many into one Body, presides over the Eucharist, and ordains. His ministry is always ecclesial and relational, never solitary or monarchical.
