Spiritual discipline of body and soul—fasting, prayer, vigil, selfrestraint— understood not as rejection of the world but as its purification and offering. Asceticism uproots self-love, the root of all passions, and opens the person to communion. It belongs to the Church’s witness against secularization and individualism.
